Recommendations

Altitude

Altitude can affect different people in different ways. Some medical or physical conditions can be enhanced by altitude and become dangerous. Activity altitudes may range approximately from 2900 mts. to 3900 mts. (9515 ft. to 12800 ft.)

If you suffer from medical or physical conditions such as those related to the heart, or others, please make sure you visit your doctor and get full acceptance from him for this activity. Also make sure our team is aware of any conditions by mentioning them on the Visitor Form provided after reservation is confirmed.

Acclimatizing

Acclimatization is more efficient when minimizing physical activity and keeping hydrated the first days in high altitude.

Half Day: Book your activity after you have been at least 1.5 days in altitude.
Full Day: Book your activity after you have been at least 2 days in altitude.

Sun Protection

Radiation level in the Andes is high. (Between 10 and 16 UV Index from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.)

Sunscreen. Sunglasses. Chapstick. Full-rim hat. Long sleeve UV protection shirt.

Insect Protection

Insects (similar to mosquitos) may be around during the excursion, their bite can generate mild to moderate allergic reactions such as itching, rash and swelling.

Insect repellant. Pants and shoes that cover all skin. (Not sandals.)

Rain Protection

Rain season is usually from November to April, however weather is always changing in the mountains and seasons can be delayed.

Rain jacket and rain pants and/or long rain coat. Waterproof hiking boots.

Clothing

Weather conditions will most likely change several times throughout the day, ranging from clear skies, to covered skies, wind, rain, hail, etc. Day temperatures can vary from 5 ºC to 23 ºC approximately. (41 ºF to 74 ºF)

Comfortable trekking clothes. Layered clothing ranging from short sleeve to fleece jacket.

Shoes

Trails can be uneven, rocky, slippery, steep, dusty and muddy. Having the right shoes can make a huge difference in how well you will be able to perform during your activity.

Comfortable shoes are a priority. Waterproof trekking shoes/boots are ideal. Avoid new shoes.

Trekking Poles

Mountain trails are generally steep and uneven.

These can be helpful to improve stability when not used to outdoor trekking and for assistance on steep slopes.

Backpack

Trekking at high altitude and extreme weather conditions may generate fatigue, a light day pack to minimize the load on your back and shoulders ir helpful.

Small and light day pack to carry personal medicine and essentials.

Child Carrier

Trails can be steep and uneven, this may lead to small children wanting a break once in a while.

A child carrier is ideal to minimize the load on parents if their youngsters get tired and will allow children to rest if necessary.

Water bottle

There is no access to running drinking water in the mountains. Your hosts will have drinking water available to refill your bottles at the beginning of your excursion and at the picnic station.

You may bring your own water bottle to refill.

Personal Medicine

There are no shops or drugstores in the area where you can find medicine.

If you have specific medical requirements please be sure to bring enough medical supplies for all your adventure.

Camera

There is no access to batteries or power chargers in the mountains.

Please remember to use your camera safely when you are not on steep slopes, uneven paths or narrow trails.

Toilet Facilities

There are no toilet facilities in the mountains. You will have access to a urinary toilet at the Llama Pack Base Camp. (For the Half Day and Full Day Nature Visit only).

Pack out toilet paper, hygiene products and a personal waste bag. In nature, human waste must be covered and disguised and no hygiene products must be left behind.

Tips

Gratuities are not included.

You may consider bringing cash and change to provide tips to your hosts.

Crafts

In some visits there will be local crafts available for purchase.

High-Andean communities will have unique crafts that you can buy.

Donations

The Llama Pack Project is a self sustained project. However donations are also very helpful to further achieve our goals.

If you wish to make a donation for the Llama Pack Project you may do so through the ‘Contribution’ section of our webpage.

School Supplies

If you wish to take make donations to the local schools or take gifts to the local families and children, school supplies are always needed. Please avoid giving out candy and keep in mind the weight that you will add to your backpack. In half day visits you may leave donations to the Llama Pack Team who will then distribute them in the communities.
