Llama Trek Model: Improving Tourism Skills
The past two years have provided significant progress to the Llama Pack Project. Thanks to responsible travelers from all over the world and international students who visit our partner high-Andean communities, members of the Guild of Llama Breeders are highly motivated to work with their llamas to provide an eco-friendly pack service and are willing to improve their breeding practices to improve the quality of their llamas. This positive change in attitude is crucial to the advancement of our long term social and environmental goals. Read about some of our highlights:
Llama Treks and Study Abroad Service-Learning Programs:
Between 2018 and 2019, the Llama Pack Sustainable Tourism Program implemented over 250 Llama Treks with the Llama Trek Model that provides training and fair work opportunities to members of the Guild of Llama Breeders through a rotation system that combined with our service-based study programs created over 920 temporary work positions.
Members of the Guild of Llama Breeders hosted over 1150 students and visitors who learned about the challenges faced by Guild members and the importance of conserving our fragile mountain ecosystems and the role of llamas for conservation.
Your visit is extremely important as every two visitors create a work and training opportunity for an average of 1.6 community members. Thanks to this possibility, the Guild of Llama Breeders has gone from 67 to 85 registered members and continues to grow!! This means your visit is positively impacting on the livelihoods of over 380 people, given the average family size in our partner high-Andean communities is 4.5 members. Considering the total population of the Urubamba Mountain Range, you have helped us motivate over 10% of the total population!!!
