Sacred Valley Llama Trek

Half Day Sacred Valley Visit

You will become familiar with the Llama Pack Project mission, meet members of the Local Guilds of Llama Breeders and herd the project llamas in the traditional Andean style while you learn all about this noble, native eco-friendly animal.

You will be hosted by members of the Local Guilds of Llama Breeders and an english/spanish speaking interpreter who will present the Llama Pack Project to the group. After that you will be asked to assist in the packing activity led by your local hosts. Then you will leave the base camp and start a 40 minute walk uphill at slow pace through a zig zag trail walking behind the llamas with assistance of your local hosts until you will reach the designated spot where you will enjoy an outdoor picnic while you chat with your hosts, relax and enjoy the panoramic views and the Valley’s fresh air. After this nice rest, you will head back with the llamas to the base camp where the visit ends.

  • Start time: Morning: 9 a.m. / Afternoon: 2 p.m.
  • Visit Duration: 3 – 4 hours.
  • Trek: Distance covered: 2 k.m. (1.2 miles) / Altitude gained: 3140 m. – 3240 m. (10300 ft. – 10630 ft.) / Physical activity: 40 – 60 minutes trekking uphill and 25 – 35 minutes trekking downhill. (Approximate times).
  • Starting/Ending point: Llama Pack Base Camp, Quebrada Pumahuanca, Urubamba. (30 minutes  from downtown Urubamba by ground transportation).

Llamas:

Llamas will be packed and herded in the traditional Andean style as a group. Visitors will assist so llamas can be contained in a specific space for packing activity.

Interpreters will provide safety information and petting will be allowed only with specific llamas at the beginning of the activity before the trek starts.

Llamas walk in a group in front of visitors and local hosts who herd the llamas from behind keeping a safe distance.

Snack: Fruit, biscuit, water.
Picnic: Tasting of typical Andean hot stone cooking with 3 varieties of native potatoes, local tubers and legumes, sweet potato and corn according to seasonal availability, traditional sauce, coca tea and sweet.

Recommendations:

Bring a lightweight personal backpack with drinking water, mosquito repellant, sunscreen, any personal medicine, cash for tips and crafts and your camera.

Wear comfortable clothes: Fresh long sleeved shirt, long pants, closed trekking shoes, socks, hat, sunglasses, extra jacket for fresh breeze, and rainproof clothes. For small children, we recommend a trekking child carrier.
