Trek Description

After 2.5 hours on ground transportation we arrive at Cuncani where we start the Llama Trek. We will camp at the Cuncani highlands in an area surrounded by ponds and lakes.

The next day we cross the Huilcajasa pass at 4450 mts. (14600 feet) point at which we start the descent to Quishuarani community accompanied by an amazing panoramic view of the Urubamba Mountain Range glaciers.

Highlights: View of the Urubamba Mountain Range glaciers and exchange with members of the local Guilds of Llama Breeders.

Participating Guild of Llama Breeders: Cuncani and Quisuarani.

Nº of working community members: 8 (For a group of up to 5 passengers).

Total walking distance: 9 k.m. (5.6 miles).

Day 1: Hours of ascending trek: 2.5 – 3 hours. (3.5 k.m. / 2.2 miles)

Day 2: Hours of ascending trek: 1 – 1.5 hours. (1 k.m. / 0.6 miles). Hours of descending trek: 3 – 3.5 hours.  (4.5 k.m. / 2.8 miles)

Minimum altitude: 2890 mts. (9482 feet)

Maximum altitude: 4450 mts. (14600 feet)

To sign up for this trek passengers must be completely acclimatized to altitude, it is recommended to start the trek at least three days after having been fully exposed to high altitude. Bring a lightweight personal backpack for daily use that will contain: drinking water, mosquito repellant, sunscreen, any personal medicine, cash for tips and crafts and your camera. The rest of your personal items should fit in a backpack or duffel bag that will be transported by the llamas and must have a maximum weight of 20 kg. (44 pounds). Pack comfortable layered clothes: fresh long sleeved shirt, long pants, closed trekking shoes, socks, hat, sunglasses, extra fleece jacket for fresh breeze, thick feather jacket for cool mornings and evenings, warm sleeping clothes, hat, gloves and rainproof clothes. Personal camping material is required: sleeping bag (- 0 ºC / 32 ºF), sleeping mat, tent (rainproof four season tent). You may bring your own or we may assist with local third party rentals.
